SUMMER ARTS WORKSHOPS

EARLY BIRD REGISTRATION NOW OPEN!

This summer, we are pleased to offer fun and rewarding classes to aspiring young artists of all levels. Whether you are looking to try a new art form or build upon prior skills, our classes will provide participants ages 7-17 a chance to develop important fundamentals across a variety of arts disciplines. Located on the campus of the Salvation Army at 3090 Long Beach Blvd., 90807, these classes include One-Week Arts Intensives and Four-Week Arts Camps with the Arts Camp culminating in a student showcase opportunity. ALL CLASS DESCRIPTIONS ARE BELOW.

REGISTRATION: Registration is open to anyone ages 7-17. If you are an Act Out Alumni outside of this age range, please contact us if you are interested in a class. A 10% discount will be provided to any Act Out Alumni, please contact us for a discount code. Early bird discounts will be available as well as a 10% discount for students at our partner school sites (Hoover MS, Hamilton MS, IVA and Hansen K-8). Registration will close 1-week prior to the beginning of each class and space is limited.

LUNCH AND ADDITIONAL OPPORTUNITIES: In partnership with the Salvation Army, we can offer a hot lunch for participants each day from 11-11:30 for an additional $20/week. Also, you can register for a Salvation Army membership for just $69/month which will include lunch PLUS a full day of exciting activities M–F all summer long.

SCHOLARSHIPS: We offer scholarships on a financial-need basis. Scholarships and financial assistance are offered as space and enrollment allow. If you believe you may qualify, please fill out the Financial Assistance Application by clicking the button below.

CANCELED CLASS: A class may be canceled if the minimum enrollment is not reached up to three (3) business days before the start of the class. In this event, you may request a transfer to a different class or request a full refund.

REFUNDS: Refunds can be requested prior to the start date of the class but due to the limited number of spaces available in our classes there will be a $50 per class drop fee. No refunds will be issued after the start date of the class. REFUND POLICIES ARE STRICTLY ENFORCED.

JULY
INTRODUCTION TO THEATRE ARTS
July 1–25, 2024

This four-week course will introduce participants to a wide variety of the fundamental principles of theatrical arts. With a focus on different aspects each week, professional instructors from numerous disciplines will teach participants about acting, character analysis, emotional exercise, storytelling, creative writing, movement, stage combat, singing and more. Participants will gain hands-on experience through theatre games, exercises and numerous performance opportunities. Week 4 will be dedicated to putting all the parts together in a final Friday showcase performance for friends and family to come and enjoy.

AUGUST
INTERMEDIATE AND ADVANCED THEATRE ARTS
July 29–AUGUST 22, 2024

This four-week course is designed for students who have previous theatrical experience but can also be taken by those who wish to build upon the lessons they learned in the first session. With a focus on different aspects each week, professional instructors from numerous disciplines will encourage students to further explore their craft and push their skills to the next level. Scene studies, partner work, improvisation games, singing, acting for the camera, creative writing, bodywork, and yoga are just some of the skills that participants can expect to improve upon. Week 4 will be dedicated to putting all the parts together in a final Friday showcase performance for friends and family to come and enjoy. *This would be a great class to take for anyone interested in preparing for and participating in Act Out’s main-stage productions for both our elementary shows and 6th grade–adult shows.

INTRODUCTION TO THEATRE

This fun class introduces students to the art of acting and acquaints them with the fundamentals of rehearsal and performance. Students participate in a variety of exercises, improvisations, scene work and games that help them build their confidence and have fun.

WEEK 2
INTRODUCTION TO STORYTELLING
July 8–11, 2024

A Young Woman Writing

This engaging class introduces students to the foundational elements of the creative process. Students will learn about the proper storytelling devices, how to analyze scenes and how to develop their own creative voice. Hands-on training in creative writing and other “behind the scenes” theatrical crafts such as costuming and stage make-up will also be explored.

Week 2

WEEK 3
INTRODUCTION TO MOVEMENT AND BODYWORK

Dancers

This physical class will get you up and moving! Participants will explore a wide variety of topics that teach them how to properly integrate movement into their character and performances. Exciting topics such as choreography, stage combat, musical theatre and more will bring your performances to life and help you become a more well-rounded performer.

WEEK 4
PERFORMANCE SHOWCASE

22–25, 2024

Theatre

This fun-filled class engages students in the creative process and allows them to use their skills in acting, singing and dance. Students learn to find their voice and hone their skills in character development, storytelling, team building and creative expression. As a bonus for this week, the goal is to create a final performance for friends and family to enjoy on the evening of Thursday July 25.

Week 4

WEEK 5
INTERMEDIATE AND ADVANCED THEATRE
July 29–August 1, 2024

Theartre performance

This dynamic class is for students who are looking to build upon their prior experience in acting and the theatre. Through partner work, scene studies, audition technique, character analysis, vocal warm-ups and numerous in-class performance opportunities, students will become more confident and better equipped to make bold performance choices.

Dance class

There is much more to performing than just saying lines. Actors need to be deeply in touch with their bodies and learn how to not be afraid of expressing themselves through movement and physical interaction. This class will challenge students to deepen their skills through movement, stage combat, partner scenes, yoga, dance and more, becoming a more complete performer who stands out in auditions and performances.

Childrens Show

This fun-filled class engages students in the creative process and allows them to use their advanced skills in acting, singing and dance. By selecting challenging material, students are pushed to hone their skills in character development, storytelling, team building and creative expression. As a bonus for this week, the goal is to create a final performance for friends and family to enjoy on the evening of Thursday August 22.
